Cloud & Hosted Solutions
I can work at any layer of the stack, from physical hardware to Software-as-a-Service. I have experience with GCP, AWS and Azure but currently use Hetzner and Cloudflare wherever possible.
Open Source Solutions First
As a user and developer of open source software, I strongly advocate for its use in business operations. There has historically been some stigma attached to open source solutions, but over the last five years or so the eco-system has changed and many software startups are basing their businesses on the open source model.
I've helped clients of all sizes to identify where open source solutions might be a best fit and how to go about successfully implementing them. The FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) landscape it's often not easy to discern solutions that will provide value for money vs those that will cause more problems than they solve.
The Pros & Cons of Open Source Business Apps
- Full control over data and infrastructure
- No vendor lock-in or proprietary formats
- Lower total cost of ownership
- Active community support and development
- Customizable to specific business needs
- May require technical expertise to maintain
- Documentation can be inconsistent
- Support may be community-dependent
- Updates can be less predictable
- Initial setup may take longer
How I Can Help
By developing an understanding of your business, the systems used and your goals, I can help you identify whether open source solutions would be a good fit and more practically how to go about implementing, integrating and maintaining them. Open source solutions often require more time, effort and resources to set up than their proprietary, SaaS-based counterparts but when implemented properly they probably a more open, flexible and scalable platform from which to grow a business.
Many of my clients started with open source by needing to solve a particular problem that wasn't easily solvable through SaaS-based systems. After putting the building blocks in place by way of basic infrastructure (typically cloud-hosted), we've added systems and built out a responsive, business-oriented environment that delivers value for money.
